Some photographs are steeped in literal meanings, framed in as direct a way as possible so as to provide a direct message from photographer to viewer. This is not one of them. Shot in Singapore by Omar Harbi, his photograph embraces ambiguity and enigma. The little girl with her balloon crosses a barrier, leaving light and stepping into darkness, from outdoors into indoors (or the reverse), and in all cases it is unclear to the viewer what her trajectory is, what her motives are, or what her costume represents. Some moments are truly fleeting and impossible to replicate, and this is likely one of them.
